Hardware and Software
This site was produced, tested, and served on a dizzying amount of hardware and software.
Most of the actual coding occurs on ares (2), my Dual PowerMac G5, with odds and ends being picked up by fuosing, a beige Apple PowerMac G3/AV on long-term loan from (the now defunct) Cnation. The graphic work is done on ares and mangala, a hand built dual-PIII linux box. (The original ares, my Rev. A Apple Powerbook Titanium, has been retired due to a flakey power supply.)
The HTML and CSS work is done in the excellent BBEdit. Graphics are mangled in Photoshop, ImageReady, GIMP, and ImageMagick.
Testing of the site primarily takes place on the Macintosh platform. Every so often I'll find a Windows machine to test on as well. The following browsers are used to test for acceptible rendering:
- Macintosh:
- Windows:
It is assumed that the redering in Mozilla and Firefox on Macintosh are representative of these browsers' rendering on other platforms. This applies to a lesser extent to Safari and the renderings of other KHTML browsers.
The site is currently hosted on elmer.realify.com, a Network Engines 5100 box running Debian GNU/Linux. Network service is provided by Cogent (2x100Mbps) with a backup (100Mbps circuit) of blended bandwidth from Level3, Abovenet, and Mizma. The hosting is graciously provided by Gary Peck.
